What "Free Drinks" on a Spring Break Party Card Usually Means

Free drinks on a spring break party card almost always means set drinks, set hours and 21+ only. The questions to ask and how the PCB Club Card spells it out.

Short answer

On a party card, "free drinks" nearly always means specific drinks during specific hours, on specific days, for guests 21+ with valid photo ID. Get all four in writing. PCB lists beer and a pre-mixed liquor option, 3 to 5 PM and 8 to 10 PM, on Ultimate and Platinum only.

“Free drinks” is the line that sells party cards. It is also the line people misread most. Nobody is handing out an open bar for a week. What you are buying is a window, and the value depends on the details of that window.

The four details that define “free drinks”

  1. Which drinks. Usually a short list: beer, a well drink, a house mix. Rarely anything you would call top shelf.
  2. Which hours. A window such as early evening, before the club fills up.
  3. Which days. Every night of the week, or only some of them?
  4. Who. 21+ with valid photo ID, every time. A card never changes the drinking age.

If a card page does not answer all four, ask before you buy. “Drink specials” and “free drinks” are not the same thing, either: a special is a discount, free is free.

How the PCB Club Card spells it out

PCB is unusually specific, which is one reason we recommend it. On its card page:

  • Ultimate ($200) and Platinum ($100): complimentary drinks from 3 to 5 PM on 6 days and from 8 to 10 PM on 7 nights.
  • What is poured: beer and a pre-mixed liquor option.
  • Who: 21+ with valid photo ID.
  • Fred’s Card ($80): no free drinks. It gets discounts on food and drinks at Hammerhead Fred’s instead.

On top of that, Platinum and Ultimate include the Beach Blast day party, with drinks and food included, on Wednesdays from 1 to 5 PM at SeƱor Frog’s.

How to actually use a drink window

This part is our advice, from doing it:

  • Plan the night around the window, not the other way round. An 8 to 10 PM window rewards getting there early. Show up at 10:30 and you have paid for something you did not use.
  • The afternoon window is the sleeper. A 3 to 5 PM window turns a beach day into a cheap pre-game without anyone hosting.
  • Carry your ID every time. The card gets you the window; the ID gets you the drink.
  • Pace it. Two windows a day for a week is a lot of opportunity. Eat, drink water, and skip a window if you need to. Never drive.

If you are 18 to 20

Drink windows are worth nothing to you, so judge a card on entry hours, venues and events. On the PCB Club Card, 18+ can enter with valid photo ID. If you are deciding between levels and only care about entry, compare the entry times first: Ultimate all night, Platinum until 11 PM, Fred’s Card 8 to 10 PM at Fred’s. More on that in 18 vs 21 at spring break.

What a drink window is worth to you

We will not put a dollar figure on a drink window, because bar prices change by venue and night and we cannot source one number that holds. Do it for yourself instead: think about how many drinks you would realistically buy between 8 and 10 PM on a normal night out, and what the bar would charge you. If you are 21+ and you go out early most nights, that is usually the line on the card that does the most work. If you go out late, or you do not drink, it is worth close to nothing, and entry hours should decide your level.

Red flags in drink promises

  • “Free drinks all week” with no hours listed.
  • “Drink specials” sold as “free drinks”.
  • No mention of age or ID.
  • Drinks at venues that are not named.
